Midwest GBW Workshop: Hand Tooling With Foils
Instructor: Jana Pullman
Date: March 21, 2009
Location: Minnesota Center for Book Arts
Open Book Building in downtown Minneapolis
1011 Washington Ave S, Suite 100
Minneapolis, MN 55415
Foils should not be limited to just stamping machines. In this workshop we will address both traditional and alternative decorative techniques using hand tools, fillets and decorative rolls. We will cover the different type of foils, real 23kt. gold, metallic and pigmented colors and their use on leather, cloth and paper - and show the advantages foil can have over traditional leaf tooling.
This class will helpful for the beginner wanting to learn valuable techniques in decorative tooling. We will also cover jigs and patterns and help the more experienced binders add foil work to their skills. Participants will work on either practice boards or on their own leather bindings.
* Jana Pullman, book artist, binder and conservator, lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota and has been involved in the book arts since 1983. She received her initial training in graduate school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison working with Walter Hamady and Jim Dast and at the University of Iowa working with Kim Merker, Bill Anthony and Tim Barrett.
After receiving her M.F.A in 1988, she supervised the Repair Unit for the General Collection at the Marriott Library at the University of Utah. After four years working at the Library, she returned to Iowa to again work with Tim Barrett as the Apprentice/Manager at the University of Iowa Oakdale Paper Facility.
At Oakdale, Jana made handmade papers tailored for book and paper conservation and helped with the ongoing research there. When her contract at Iowa ended in 1997, she moved to Minneapolis where she is an adjunct faculty member in the Art Department at the University of Minnesota and an instructor at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. She also teaches workshops throughout the country.
