[GBW] Tour of Exhibition "Protecting the Word: BookBindings of the Morgan Library"
The GBW NY Chapter is organizing a tour of the exhibition, "Protecting the Word: Bookbindings of the Morgan Library," with the exhibition's curator H. George Fletcher. There are just a couple of spots left.
The exhibition consists of about 55 outstanding bindings from the Library's Special Bindings Collection, which was developed to exemplify the history of bookbinding. The bindings on view include the jeweled binding of the Lindau Gospels, the Coptic Tracery Binding, one of the finest surviving examples of coptic binding, as well as bindings by Roger Bartlett and Paul Bonet.
H. George Fletcher is a former curator at the Morgan. He recently retired as Director of Special Collections at the New York Public Library.
The tour will take place at 3pm on Thursday, March 5, 2009 at the Morgan Library and Museum.
Admission, which covers the cost of entrance to the museum, is $10 and must be paid in advance to reserve a spot on the tour.

From the The Morgan Library and Museum website:
"Protecting the Word: Bookbindings of the Morgan" presents a selection of outstanding works from the collection. Highlights include a bejeweled eighth-century binding used on the famous Lindau Gospels, a magnificent seventh-to-eighth–century Coptic work, and a
seventeenth-century English Bible and prayer book in stump work embroidery. Together, these and approximately 50 additional works in the exhibition, demonstrate the skill and artistry of bookbinding at its finest.
