Re: [GBW] End of spine-bands
Chris
Correctly differentiates between a headband and end band. the first a
headband, is a decorative but should be (from a conservators view)
solidly sewn. An End band is sewn as a "headband" but the core is
laced into the boards and becomes a structural part of the book's
makeup. Both are sewn independent of the sewing of the text block.
An "End of spine band" is just that. A sewing support that is at the
top and bottom of the book, it appears just below the top or bottom
edge of the text block, but most important, it is sewn at the same
time as the rest of the sewing (of the text block)
I hope more people will continue the differentiation of a headband and
end band. And some will want to call it a tail band not just a
headband, but for bibliographic description, Headband (decorative) and
End band (structural), should be sufficient.

Subject: [GBW] End of spine-bands
How does Christopher Clarkson define the term "end of spine-band"? It
is mentioned at
http://cool-palimpsest.stanford.edu/byorg/gbw/chapters/newengland/html/e
ndbands.html
I understand that he differentiates endbands as structural/laced-in and
headbands as decorative but what are end of spine-bands?
