[GBW] Metzger Lecture and Workshop Now Online @ Syracuse University Library
Video and images of Chela Metzger?s lecture and workshop, held as part of
the Brodsky Series for the Advancement of Library Conservation here @
Syracuse University Library are now online at
<http://library.syr.edu/information/preservation/brodsky/metzger/metzger.htm
>. Chela is a librarian, bookbinder and book conservator currently teaching
full-time at the Kilgarlin Center for Preservation of the Cultural Record
University of Texas at Austin School of Information.
Chela?s lecture explored the skills a book conservator must have to treat
damaged rare books properly, and asked the question of whether the
restoration/conservation of books is a craft related to bookbinding? And if
so, what is the best way to teach that craft?
In her workshop participants explored the historical ?account/stationary?
books found throughout Europe in various styles, many featuring intricate
leather lacing patterns. Participants had an opportunity to make their own
parchment tackets, practice lacing and tacketing techniques off the book,
practice making loops and buttons off the book, all culminating to create at
least a traditional stationery binding, combining techniques as desired.
Participants ranging from seasoned conservators to students from Syracuse?s
iSchool and the College of Visual and Performing Arts spent two days
experiencing the structure in a variety of creative ways.
Planning for next year?s event will begin soon and we look forward to
welcoming you back here at Syracuse. Reports with video and images of past
events remain online at
