[GBW] Potomac Chapter workshop announcement
Saturday, September 6th 2008
Solvent-Set Tissues for Book Repair - One Day Workshop with Jake
Benson
This workshop will explore various methods for using solvent activated
papers and tissues for book repair, and especially for treating leather
bindings. Initially developed by book conservators several years ago at
Harvard University, this technique is essentially a derivation of the
Etherington method for repairing books with Japanese paper, but without
introducing moisture into the repairs. Participants will learn various
methods of applying a reversible acrylic adhesive on various papers and
tissues, activating the adhesive, and explore different approaches for
using them to repair leather bindings. Advantages, disadvantages, and
limitations of the method will also be discussed.
Course fee for members: $100.00
Course fee for non-members: $125.00
Material fee: $15.00
Location: Werner Gundersheimer Conservation lab at the Folger
Shakespeare Library, Washington DC
Time: 9:00am - 5:00pm (coffee and lunch break)
Jake Benson is a 1995 graduate of the two-year bookbinding program at
Boston's North Bennet Street School. He is currently an artist in
residence at the Pyramid Atlantic Arts Center in Silver Spring,
Maryland.
