[GBW] Conservation technician position, Harvard
The Schlesinger Library of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study is seeking a half-time Conservation Technician to treat and house book and manuscript material. Under the supervision of the Collections Conservator, the technician will carry out a broad range of book and paper conservation treatments on bound and unbound materials. Treatments on paper include: cleaning, washing, flattening, and mending. Binding treatments include hinging, recasing, and rebacking. The technician will participate in rehousing projects and construct protective enclosures such as phase boxes. The technician also will assist the Collections Conservator with special projects, and maintain treatment statistics. All work is carried out according to established conservation practice.
Requirements:
High School diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with book and paper conservation procedures; experience in bookbinding and paper repair through a formal training program or on the job training. Ability to work with a high degree of accuracy and precision. Knowledge of book structures preferred. College background preferred. Background and/or interest in American history preferred.
The Schlesinger is a non-circulating library. The successful candidate will gain experience in a dynamic and congenial library setting and benefit from the rich cultural environment of Harvard University.
