After reading that wonderful piece on the British Library, I thought you might enjoy an update on Weimar's Anna Amalia Library:

My husband sent me this link. He worked on the self-adhevsive stamp mention in the British Library article (at least the American version). They took great care in using a reversable adhesive. Don't know what happened after the company sold the process.....So it goes...
