[GBW] Re: GBW Digest, Vol 14, Issue 7

It was written: "...it strikes me as excessive moralism to stridently denounce anyone whose assessment of which risks are worth taking differ from one's own."

As I have read and reread all the messages in response to Mr. Farthing's posting about the use of Chloromine T I nowhere find anyone to be engaged in excessive moralizing or a strident denunciation of any person.

My take on Mr. Mowrey's initial reply is that at the very worst it could be characterized as didactic should one need to characterize. Even the best educated of us ought always be open to learning new things especially if what we have learned in the past (and perhaps still practice) are now known and accepted by professional conservators and/or conservation scientists to be more detrimental than beneficial.

Hopefully we leave the materials we treat in no worse shape for posterity than they would have been had we not treated them. (For me that is the ideal -- however dealing with clients sometimes throws that "ideal" out the window with the bleaching solution when you have to depend on bookbinding/restoration/conservation to put a roof over your head and bread on the table.) --David.
