[GBW] Chicago Public Library's One Book, Many Interpretations Exhibit- Final Week!

Best Artist and Fine Bindings featured in Chicago Public Library's One Book, Many Interpretations exhibit

To commemorate the five-year anniversary of One Book, One Chicago, bookbinders and artists were invited to interpret the first ten One Book, One Chicago selections through artistic bookbinding in a juried exhibition.

The best of the artistic renderings will be on display in a free exhibit open to the public in the Special Collections Exhibit Hall, 9th Floor of the Harold Washington Library Center, 400 S. State St., from September 30, 2006, through April 22, 2007. Exhibition hours are: Monday - Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Sunday 1 p.m- 5 p.m.

The artistic bindings showcased in the competition encompass the history of the very successful One Book, One Chicago program, which started in the Fall of 2001. Titles include: To Kill a Mockingbird, Night, My Ántonia, A Raisin in the Sun, The Things They Carried, The Coast of Chicago, In the Time of the Butterflies, The Ox-Bow Incident, Pride and Prejudice and One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich.

The jurors selected a total of forty-seven bindings for the exhibit from almost eighty entries submitted. One artistic interpretation of each of the ten titles was chosen to receive a "Best Binding" award, for a total of ten first prizes. Each of the forty-seven unique bindings in the exhibit is accompanied by a description of the binding materials and construction methods used, as well as the binders' own comments on what inspired their creations.
