NEW LEAVES Presents:
a series of occasional lectures on typographical topics typically scheduled
for Spring
SPACE FOR NAME; PRINTING A 1920s LITTLE MAGAZINE
a talk by Walker Rumble
April 26; 5:30 - 7pm
Galanti Lounge
University of Rhode Island Library
S4N, a printer's placeholder and acronym for "space for name" , was used in
anticipation of a title that never materialized for this little magazine.
S4N, published from 1919 - 1925 was, along with a small handful of other
little literary journals, the avant garde of early literary modernism.
Join Walker Rumble , historian, author, and proprietor of Oat City Press,
http://oatcity.com/, in his discussion of the way S4N was produced as a
printed artifact, examining the typographical reaction to the 19th century
changes in literary expression and the intersection between text and
production of a little magazine. Walker will reveal through his research the
work involved in the collaboration of, among others, E E Cummings and the
printer Carl Purington Rollins in producing S4N.
In advance of the lecture, New Leaves Press will announce the winner of our
3rd annual poetry contest.
Light refreshments will be served and the event is open to the public.
