[GBW] position at Newberry Library in Chicago



TITLE: Collections Conservator

DEPARTMENT: Conservation Services

SUMMARY: Reporting to the Director of Conservation Services, the
Collections Conservator is responsible for the physical care and
treatment of General Collections, including Open Shelf Reference
Collections. These non-circulating collections include a broad range of
materials including books, papers, parchment, photographs, and other
materials produced since 1600. The Collections Conservator also performs
treatments on Special Collections materials and assists the Director
with all departmental activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for planning and coordinating workflow for
General Collections material; works with the Director of Conservation
Services, curators, supervisors and stack managers to identify and
prioritize materials in need of repair; specifies and performs
appropriate treatments with documentation; completes Special Collections
treatments and documentation in consultation with the Director and
curators; manages Library Binding; educates General Collections staff
and other Library staff in the care and handling of materials; acts as
liaison with Information Technology staff; participates in Library
Services committees; assists the Director with the following: managing
and implementing environmental and pest monitoring and disaster
preparedness programs; training and supervising volunteers, interns and
technicians; conducting surveys for exhibits, loans, and other special
projects; preparing monthly reports for various departmental activities;
database management, maintenance, and training of staff; facilitating
tours of the department and other forms of outreach; all other tasks or
activities needed for the achievement of departmental goals.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor¹s degree required; graduate degree in
Conservation or equivalent followed by a minimum 2 years experience at
post-internship level, preferably in a research library; extensive
experience in bookbinding and knowledge of conservation theory and
practice for books and papers; ability to work independently and as a
team; excellent computer skills and experience with MS Access preferred.

SCHEDULE: Full-time, 35 hours/week, Monday through Friday, with
occasional evening assignments. Exempt position.
