Grade:  C&T level D
37.5 hours/wk
Work Schedule:  Weekdays 8:30 a.m. 5:00 p.m.
Temporary position: immediately to January 31, 2007

THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY

THE PRESERVATION DEPARTMENT
Yale University Library's Preservation Department, started in 1971, is one of the oldest in the country. It has strong administrative support and has played a major role in the development of the preservation field. The department consists of units covering special collections conservation, collections care and reformatting with system wide responsibilities for the treatment of rare and special collections materials and circulating materials, mass deacidification, microfilming, preservation photocopying, staff and user-education and consultation on wide variety of preservation concerns.


COLLECTIONS CARE
Collections Care is one unit within the Preservation Department and is responsible for the care and repair of all circulating collections including reference materials. In addition, Collections Care includes monograph commercial binding and a stack-cleaning project. Collections Care staff consult and provide leadership Library-wide on conservation issues such as the safe care and handling of circulating collections, emergency response and recovery, and provide information to the public on conservation practices at Yale University Library. The Collections Care Supervisor serves as a member of the Preservation Management Team.




RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the close supervision of the Head of Collections Care and under the work direction of the Conservation Assistant (E level), the Conservation Assistant I performs a variety of tasks related to the repair of books and other library materials from Yale's circulating collections. The Conservation Assistant I is responsible for repairing library materials by returning them to a usable condition while retaining as much of the original information as possible; performing minor book repair, including hinge tightening, preparing books for commercial binding, rebacks, board reattachment, and other types of repairs as assigned and repairs and protects paper by dry cleaning, tissue mending and encapsulation. S/he performs pamphlet binding using pre-made binders in a variety of styles and makes protective enclosures including tux and phase boxes, clamshell boxes and portfolios. The assistant performs book and paper treatments with tools and equipment appropriate for the task; this includes but is not limited to hand tools, book presses, board shears, guillotine, ultrasonic welder, board creaser, wire-stitcher or stapler and may also perform minor maintenance on this equipment. S/he uses limited range of chemicals to perform specific treatments when necessary, following appropriate safety measures. The assistant photocopies material to preservation standards. S/he charges and discharges all titles to the appropriate department patron id card; sorts appropriate library material by binding style; moves, counts and sorts volumes for pamphlet binding; mixes and applies solutions used in the conservation of library materials; and is expected to track personal work statistics monthly via written record and electronic spreadsheet; keyboard call numbers and labels; and search for reader requests and misplaced books retrieving and delivering library materials. The Conservation Assistant is expected to follow unit and department procedures and policies.



QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of directly relevant work experience and a high school level education or the equivalent combination of experience and education; good manual dexterity; patience with delicate, sometimes repetitious work and ability to accurately follow detailed procedures. Basic computer skills including word processing and inputting data on spreadsheets. Ability to move pallets of board or other oversized supplies using a hand truck; to push a fully loaded book truck; and to lift boxes up to 30 lbs. References must indicate reliable attendance and punctuality, accuracy and attention to detail, self-motivation, and diligent performance and indicate the ability to interact and communicate tactfully and effectively with a wide variety of people, to work efficiently and independently, to organize own work to meet unit goals and priorities and to work under pressure in an environment of change. The ability to participate in setting goals and priorities with fellow team members and to solve a wide range of problems in accordance with established procedures. Experience in bookbinding or book repair is preferred.
