Subject: Grolier Club Sept. exhibitions
The Grolier Club will start the fall season with two new exhibitions
opening in September, to which you are cordially invited.
In the main gallery, the Club is proud to present the Guild of Book
Workers Centenary Exhibition, opening to the public on September 20. The
exhibition, consisting of both a juried selection drawn from the Guild's
approximately one thousand members, and a historical retrospective of
work produced by the Guild, will reflect the maturation of this
venerable
organization and highlight its many contributions to the book arts. The
Guild of Book Workers was founded in 1906 in America to "establish and
maintain a feeling of kinship and mutual interest among workers in the
several hand book crafts." Among its early members were well-known
artist-craft workers such as bookbinder Edith Diehl and printers and
typographers W.A. Dwiggins and Frederic W. Goudy. The Guild has now
evolved into a national organization whose members' activities encompass
artist's books, bookbinding, calligraphy, conservation, and decorated
papers. As it marks its centenary, the work produced by Guild members
has evolved from being primarily focused on the art of traditional
"fine"
binding in leather with ornate gold tooling to more conceptual works
embracing the artists' book movement, embracing sculptural books and
innovative structures.
The Club's second floor gallery will present a special exhibition of The
Neale M. Albert Collection of Miniature Designer Bindings, opening to
the public on Sept. 14. This remarkable, often jewel-like assemblage is
comprised of two hundred and fifty artist-designed, unique bindings for
miniature books, each individually commissioned by the collector. With
the aim of fostering creativity, Mr. Albert provided complete artistic
freedom to each binder for the collection, setting no limit to their
selection
of materials or theme, and the result includes some of the most
imaginative
bindings ever conceived. Free to follow their inspiration, the binders
crafted these miniature volumes into diminutive contemporary artworks
that often stretch the limits of the binder's art and are conceptions at
once
poetic, whimsical and surprising. The collection includes examples from
binders in France, Belgium, Sweden, Hungary, Finland, Japan, Israel,
Austria, Germany, Czech Republic, England, Ireland, Denmark, Argentina,
Australia, Malta, Spain, Greece, Canada, and the United States.
Catalogues for both exhibitions will be available soon.
