Re: [GBW] lead weights
I know what you mean, Barbara. I have been a printer and have three
cabinets of type. I would never melt it down--too scarce and
valuable. I'd like to sell it.
I still use some for titling books.
About linotype, which is a softer lead composition, can
easily be melted. The method I use is to put it in a cast iron ladle
which I have had for years, place it in a rack like they use in
laboratories, placed over a pressurized can of gas, which is readily
available at hardware stores, and maybe paint stores. Do it in a
garage or shed away from anything that will burn, and don't leave it
until the lead is melted. When melted, use heavy gloves and pour it
into some kind of mould the shape you want it.
If you have a number of linotype "slugs"--I have tied them
together and wrapped them in paper, taping it well. These make
excellent weights for holding paper where you want it. Saves having
to melt them!
Good luck, Rollin
