[GBW] FW: September Events in the Main Library

[Michigan State University Libraries welcomes you to a lecture in the Library Colloquim Series

> "Making a Medieval Manuscript in Modern Times"
>
> How did those medieval monks make beautiful illuminated manuscripts? Artist Pamela Rups will show how it was done. She is making her version of an early thirteenth-century English Bestiary using authentic techniques and materials whenever possible. From spinning her own flax for sewing the book together, to making oak gall ink, writing with a quill pen (in medieval Latin!), and using real gold, Pamela will explain the processes and show the audience many of the tools and materials that were used. Her manuscript is 80-pages long, written on calf vellum, which will be bound in red leather on oak boards with a chemise. She received a Masters Degree from Western Michigan University in April 1997, for this project, which includes a 150-page thesis detailing her experience and findings.
>
> Ms. Rups has lectured extensively on her projects and related subjects in public schools and WMU classes, as well as at the Newberry Library in Chicago and the International Medieval Congress.
