Re: [GBW] saving original endsheets

Whew! This has been a good lesson in asking a question. I would really like to save the original cover. It has character. The old glue holding the super in place had dried out, so I carefully removed the textblock from the endsheets and cut the old super. I was planning on adding the old endsheets back onto the textblock, then super, a japanese hollow.. and then inserting it back into it's old cover.

Are you trying to remove them entirely because you are making a new cover
and want to include them? If so why not just throw the whole board in a
bucket of water? You should test the ink first to make sure nothing will run
off but I do this procedure all the time and have never had trouble with
losing designs. This can't be done with certain kinds of paper so test
first!
The procedure is really quite simple. You have the option of removing the
book-cloth first or not. I recommend sanding the edges off then peeling the
bookcloth or leather off (to be saved for who knows what). Then get a clean
bucket and fill it with warm water. Put the board in and wait. Be patient.
Check it occasionally and try to work a corner up with a Teflon lifter. It
can be tricky if the paper is fragile. Have some paper towels ready to set
it on when you finally get it completely off the board. You will be working
underwater until it is off. After blotting it briefly with the paper towels
transfer it to some real blotter paper with hollytex liners. The hollytex
will keep it from sticking to the blotter in case you missed removing some
of the old glue. A soft paintbrush plied while the paper is still under
water works well. Keep it under weights until dry and change the blotters
as appropriate. Later you can repair the page from the back.
I hope this helps.

Subject: Re: saving original endsheets

My problem: I have been unsuccessful at removing the endsheets on a book.
They are beginning to tear. I think that I have been too timid in removing
them and have caused this. I would still like to save them. Any
suggestions in removing endsheets that are stubborn and torn? Or is it a
better idea to just finish tearing them off and replacing them with a good
paper? Someone suggested that I try to make a color copy of them, but I do
not know of a place that offers archival copying in my location (Dallas/Fort
Worth, Texas). Or if that is a good idea at all.

thanks,
Leslie
