Preservation Specialist and Processing Coordinator

The Health Sciences Library at the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill is currently recruiting the following SPA position in the
Resources Management Services department.  Diane McKenzie is the hiring
supervisor.

                            Minimum Education and Experience
Education equivalent to graduation from high school and five years of
progressive library experience; or an Associate degree in library
technology from a two-year technical school or community college and two
years of progressive library experience; or graduation from a four-year
college or university and two years of progressive library experience.

                            Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Experience repairing, binding, and constructing enclosures for damaged
library materials.

                            Preferred Qualifications
Ability to perform detailed and precise work, ability to visualize end
product, artistic and aesthetic sensibility, good judgment and
initiative in determining effective use of time, flexibility and ability
to adjust priorities as needed. Training and supervisory experience,
general knowledge of library procedures and operations. Familiarity with
an online library catalog, familiarity with email and use of
applications in a networked environment, desire in improving skills and
expanding knowledge through workshops, etc. A minimum of one year of
previous conservation or preservation experience or related work with
archival collections. Familiarity with processing, handling, and
housing of archival collections. Good analytical and organizational
skills, good communication skills, creative and complex problem solving
ability, manual dexterity, ability to measure and estimate measurements
accurately, basic math skills, and basic competence with computer
applications.

Working title: Preservation Specialist and Processing Coordinator
                            Special Physical/Mental Requirements:
Must be able to operate a table -top board shear, a heavy duty stapler,
and other standard preservation equipment. Must be able to use a variety
of precision hand tools and preservation  materials (eg. adhesives) on a
daily basis. Must be able to push at least 30 pounds of books on a book
truck and be able to pull materials from library stacks.  Employee must
be able to use normalprecautions and safety equipment to tolerate and to
be in contact with dust, mold spores, and other allergens.

                            Position Requirements
 Hours: Monday – Friday  8:00 – 5:00
