In many bookbinding styles, the sewing of the book--its most interesting=20
feature--is hidden. Long stitch and tacket bindings, on the other hand, are=
=20
a celebration of sewing; the links of colorful stitching parading up and=20
down the spines of the books expose the fascinating construction details of=
=20
these historical models.
The long stitch is sewn with a single thread; the tacket, with a multitude=
=20
of varied colored threads. Soft and pliant paper cases complete the=
bindings.
Day #1 is an exercise in paper folding, pattern making, and sewing, as you=
=20
start (and finish!) your two small chunky books. Day #2 is a leap into the=
=20
glue pots, as you cut, construct, and cover a cloth-over-boards slipcase,=20
lined with a decorative paper and enhanced with a ribbon pull.
This workshop is a satisfying way to learn and practice all basic=20
bookbinding and box-making skills, starting with how to fold a piece of=20
paper and ending with how to select--and apply--adhesives. Your final=20
package of a sweet pair of books nestled in a slipcase encapsulates a brief=
=20
history of bookbinding.
An ideal class for teachers, artists, and beginning bookbinders.
About the Instructor: Barbara Mauriello is an artist and conservator who=20
has a bookbinding studio in Hoboken, NJ. She is on the faculty at the=20
International Center of Photography and The Center for Book Arts, and=20
conducts workshops at art centers across the country, including Penland=20
School of Crafts and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. In 2000, Barbara=20
published a book, Making Memory Boxes (Rockport Publishers).
