The Potomac Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers will present its Spring Program on April 14, 2004, at the Folger Shakespeare Library, 201 E. Capitol Street, S.E., Washington, DC. A reception will be held from 5:30 pm to 6 pm; the program will begin at 6 pm.
Our speaker will be Rachel-Ray Cleveland, a conservator in private practice, who will discuss her research, "Copy Press Books: A Look at Copy Inks." Ms. Cleveland is head of Cleveland Conservation of Art on Paper, Inc., and has recently moved into a new conservation studio in South Laurel, Maryland. She is a flat paper conservator and serves clients in the Mid-Atlantic area. Rachel-Ray has a strong interest in handwriting inks and has researched various recipes for inks used in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. In the book, Before Photocopying: The art and History of Mechanical Copying, by Barbara Rhodes and William Streeter, she contributed a chapter on Early American copy inks and, subsequently, has been asked to speak in Europe and American on this subject. She received a BFA in intaglio printmaking from the University of Iowa. She also holds a Graduate Certificate in Collection Mangement from the Chicago Art Institute and an MA in Art Conserv!
ation from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
