Sophia,

I would recommend trying a product called eVALite.  It
is a dense foam that does not go flakey so would not
get caught in the metal boss that you mentioned.  You
can get it at McMaster-Carr (a lovely company if you
have not heard of it) and the web site is

Just do a search for evalite and there it is.

Otherwise, you could try Volara which you can get in
sheets from Gaylord Brothers on the web at

www.gaylord.com
