TERRA AUSTRALIS
"Terra Australis is an artist's book made of holes, stones, water, soil and
air, traversed by time and pervaded by melancholy. Every page opens on the
edge of a measured visual abyss where the invitation to venture through the
deep and impenetrable matter is both dangerous and real". Tommaso Durante
The Italian Institute of Culture is proud to present the launch of the
artist book Terra Australis by Tommaso Durante on Thursday 18 March 2004 at
7.30pm. An evening of both art and poetry, this special occasion will take
place in the spectacular setting of the Cowen Gallery within the State
Library of Victoria. Guest speakers include Penny Hutchinson, Director, Arts
Victoria; Assoc. Prof. Su Baker, Head of Art, Victorian College of the Arts
and Prof. Emeritus Chris Wallace-Crabbe, Director, Australian Centre,
University of Melbourne.
Born in 1956, Tommaso Durante is a highly established Italian contemporary
artist. In addition to exhibiting on a regular basis, he has created a
number of artist books which reflect his view of life and of art itself.
Durante's latest publication, Terra Australis, is a collection of suggestive
images, elaborated by digital painting, which allude to the beautiful bright
reds, blues and variegated shades of black and grey, that the artist
perceived from his very first meeting with the local land. Accompanying the
images is a unique and prestigious selection of ten poems, presented both in
English and Italian. Each text is written by a different Australian author.
