Subject: Viruses and infected messages to the list.
As acting listmgr, I'll answer this one.
The listserv is not at fault. Not attachments are allowed, and those that
are sent are "scrubbed" by the listserv software. Mail headers and
addresses are regularly faked, and all it takes is to have the list address
and/or a subscribers address in the address book and the message gets on
the list. This means a message with an infected attachment appears to come
from the list when it is actually coming from somewhere else.
As I said, listserv removes all attachments. Does this mean one is 100%
safe? Nope, and that's why it's critical to have anti-virus software on
ones computer, and keep it current. This can mean getting virus definition
downloads more than once a week. Most software can be set to do this
automatically. Additionally, NEVER open attachments unless you were:
expecting them, know the sender, and have had them screened.
It's a dangerous world out there. Use protection.
