TITLE: Conservation Technician
REQUISITION NUMBER: 1870BR
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Perform a variety of conservation treatments to cloth,
paper, leather bindings, etc. Fabricate, assemble and modify textblocks and
covers, reback spines. Construct drop spine boxes and various protective
enclosures, mend torn pages, resew and tip in loose pages. Dry clean, wash,
flatten, encapsulate, mend and mat. Report to the Conservation Librarian.
QUALIFICATIONS: High School diploma and 1 year book conservation experience
and knowledge of current book and paper conservation techniques and
understanding of basic conservation principles. Excellent communication and
decision-making skills. Proficiency using conservation equipment and tools.
A portfolio of completed treatment work is required at time of interview.
Ability to work independently. Experience working in an institutional
library setting preferred.
BENEFITS/SALARY: Excellent benefits after 3 months' employment, including
full medical, dental, health for self and eligible family members, tuition
remission for self and eligible family members, pension, supplemental
tax-deferred annuity plan, paid vacation/sick/holidays, etc. The salary is
fixed at $33,878 per annum. The position is covered under a collective
bargaining agreement and the incumbent will be required to join the union or
pay an equivalent agency fee within 31 days of employment as a condition of
employment.
