[GBW] leather reback workshop
LEATHER REBACKING WORKSHOP
WHEN: Saturday and Sunday, October 18 - 19, 2003 from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM

COST: $120 for GBW members, $150 for non members (a check holds your spot)

Don Rash, known for his work with leather bindings, will teach a workshop on leather rebacking for the Delaware Valley Chapter of the Guild Of Bookworkers. Don plans to cover the following topics during the workshop: preparations for rebacking, methods of board reattachment, corner treatment, gluing up and lining the spine, headbanding, paring and toning new leather, rebacking, laying original sides, replacing original spine, toning and laying new inner joints and furbishing. And if that isn't enough, if time permits he will cover handmade paper as a leather substitute and Japanese tissue joint and cap repair.
Each participant should bring the following supplies to class: awl, bone folder(s), utility knife and/or snapblade knife, dividers, scissors, paring knife, sharpening stone if you have one, Scharffix if you have one, straightedge or metal ruler, fine point marker, sewing needles, spatula, scalpel, lifting knife if you have one, two or three full calf or sheep bindings with intact textblock to reback (nothing huge), glue brush, paste brush.
