American Academy of Bookbinding Graduates Two Students
Another step in strengthening the art and craft of fine bookbinding in the
United States was completed when the American Academy of Bookbinding,
located in Telluride, Colorado, graduated its first two students after
completion of a five-year course of study. On May 23, 2003, the students,
Cathy Adelman from Malibu, California and Jeffrey Altepeter from Somerville,
Massachusetts, were awarded diplomas in professional bookbinding during a
formal ceremony. Cathy and Jeff satisfied five years of course requirements,
plus they completed over twenty bindings, both in class and independently,
and a research paper, all of which were judged by a juried panel of highly
respected fine binders with over 200 years of collective experience in the
art of bookbinding. The jury consisted of Tini Miura, Einen Miura and Daniel
Tucker, all founders and faculty of the AAB, plus independent jurors
Eleanore Ramsey, Monique Lallier and Frank Mowery.
The AAB was founded in 1993 to fill the gap of both academic and
apprenticeship tradition in the U.S. which would give professional as well
as amateur bookbinders the opportunity to refine their skills by receiving
top level instruction without having to study abroad. The goal of the
Academy is to graduate professional binders who have the knowledge and
skills to produce fine leather bindings of the highest quality and to pass
on these skills to the next generation. Guest faculty has included
Hans-Peter Frölich, Louis Genest, Frank Mowery and Eleanore Ramsey. Classes
are limited and students must apply for acceptance into the program. For
