[GBW] Lecture in Boston

The New England Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers will host a
presentation on bookbinding leather on Saturday, October 18, 2003, from
10:00 to 12:00. The lecture will be held at the Boston Athenaeum, with the
new conservation laboratory open for tours after the talk.  There also will
be an opportunity to examine and purchase leather at this event.



Roger Barlee of Hewit's Tannery in Scotland will speak on "Leather Tanning
and Archival Leathers". Mr. Barlee will give an overview of the history of
tanning methods and discuss the tanning technologies now in use at Hewit's.
He will also outline the development of archival tanning processes in the
last twenty years, including a recent effort by tanneries in the UK,
Germany, Italy and Greece to develop more stable leathers for bookbinding
using an aluminum retanning process.



The Presenter:

Roger Barlee was educated at the Edinburgh Academy and Aberdeen University,
graduating in 1984 with an Honours degree in Chemistry. On leaving
University he studied at the National Leathersellers College in Northampton,
where he attended the one year post-graduate course in Leather Science,
obtaining a Higher National Diploma. Upon graduation he joined the family
business, J.Hewit & Sons Ltd., and became Managing Director in 1985.

business now in at least its seventh generation, manufacturing the finest
