Edna, you might check Bernard MIddleton's book on restoration. He recommends
rubbing on "household dirt". When I asked him what that was, as my dustpan
is usually full of Labrador hair, he said that it is the dirt/dust that
collects above doorways! I think he said he also sometimes used the coloring that is
put in gravy to make it brown.... Of course the traditional way of coloring
papers to match is with tea (pinkish) or coffee (yellowish) which does a very
good job of it... Yes, it is acidic but generally less so than the book it is
