PROTECTING CULTURAL COLLECTIONS FROM PESTS AND MOLD

October 2 -3, 2003 - Portland, OR

The Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) and the
Balboa Art Conservation Center (BACC) are presenting two workshops on
protecting cultural collections from mold and pests to be held in Portland,
OR on October 2-3, 2003. Co-sponsored by PORTALS (Portland Area
Library System), Orbis Cascade Alliance, and OCLC Western Service, the
workshops are partially funded by the National Endowment for the
Humanities (NEH).

Controlling Pests: Where Eating Is Not Permitted
Thursday, October 2, 2003

This workshop is designed as an introduction to integrated pest
management (IPM) for cultural institutions. The IPM approach to
preventing and managing insect infestation relies on regular monitoring,
documentation, and primarily non-chemical prevention. The workshop
will include information on developing an IPM program, and a review of
pests most often found in cultural collections.

Workshop Location:
Portland State University
Smith Memorial Union (Student Union)
1825 SW Broadway - Room 296
Portland, OR

Be Prepared...Managing A Mold Invasion
Friday, October 3, 2003

This workshop provides an understanding of how and why mold blooms
occur and gives strategies for prevention. The immediate responses to
inactivate an outbreak will be reviewed in addition to follow-up procedures
to prevent future outbreaks. The safety and health hazards will also be
underscored.

Workshop Location:
Multnomah County Central Library
US Bank Room
801 S.W. 10th Ave.
Portland, OR 97205-2597

Note: Attending both workshops is recommended but not required.

Speaker:
Dr. Thomas Parker, President and entomologist for Pest Control Services,
Inc., Lansdowne, PA. Dr. Parker attended the University of Delaware
School of Agriculture and Purdue University. In 1975, he founded Pest
Control Services, Inc., a consulting firm that develops and implements
integrated pest management programs for museums, historic structures,
libraries, and collections.

He often works professionally as an expert witness in litigation matters,
primarily involved with wood-destroying organisms. Dr. Parker has
worked with collections and buildings threatened by mold, insects, birds,
bats, and rodents throughout the United States and some foreign
countries. He has frequently lectured about recovery from mold outbreaks
and about integrated pest management programs for cultural institutions.
