[GBW] Two Workshops at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts - September 6 - 8

Springback
With visiting artist Peter Verheyen
Saturday & Sunday, September 6 & 7, 9 a.m. ? 5 p.m.

The springback binding style is one of the more unusual of traditional 
binding techniques. Long made by trade binderies for account and ledger 
books, it continues to find use in the making of guestbooks. The unique 
feature of this structure is that when the book opens, the pages lie flat 
so that one can write across the gutter. This is accomplished by the 
combination of "spring" and "levers" which throw the book. Traditionally 
these books were covered in a robust cloth such as moleskin or course 
linen, but leather was also used, especially for presentation guestbooks.

In this workshop, participants will complete one springback binding in the 
German hand binding style. All materials will be supplied. The binding will 
be covered in full cloth. During the two days of the workshop, participants 
will make endsheets, sew, forward, build up the spring, and cover the book.

Fee: $190, $170 members, $50 supply fee

Historic Endbands
With visiting artist Peter Verheyen
Monday, September 8, 6 ? 9 p.m.

"A book without an endband is like a gentleman without a tie." In this 
workshop participants will begin with the basic wrapped core "stuck-on," 
and move on to explore numerous historical variations ranging from the 
basic "primary" which serves as a foundation for plaited and braided 
endbands using thread and leather to more modern single and double core 
variations. Samples will be sewn on robust practice "cards."

Fee: $50, $45 members, $15 supply fee
