Re: [GBW] rant
Since Harcourt denies ever having bound a book like the one I
described, I will take Mr. Ellenport at his word and apologize to
Harcourt for having attributed the guillotining and oversewing to
them. I'll take my lumps, even swallowing the ad hominem comparison
to Rush Limbaugh. I confess that it is quite puzzling why someone
wrote Harcourt's name, a date, and a price in the book, though. If
Harcourt didn't do the work, then why would someone write down they
did? Weird.
However, it remains true that *someone* did it. I second Mr.
Ellenport's suggestion that a discussion of binding ethics and
"problem" books be a component of the Standards Meeting. While
several binders have agreed with me that guillotining signatures and
oversewing is butchery, I have been quite surprised at how many
people have sung a few choruses of The Customer Is Always Right, and
The Nuremburg Blues ("I didn't want to do it, but someone told me
to").
