This workshop will cover two traditional English techniques which date to
the eighteenth century - Tree Calf, and Cambridge Panel. In addition we will
cover the theory and practice of leather dyeing and staining, and look at a
few other techniques and practices, including Cat's Paw, and simple
sprinkling.

Tree Calf is a technique practiced throughout the nineteenth century on
leather bindings, where the boards are sprinkled with an acid stain,
creating a pattern which resembles the trunk and branches of a tree. This
once secret technique, pioneered by the London firm of W.T.Morrells, was
recently unearthed by Terry Buckley from the London College of Printing.

The Cambridge panel is the all purpose, easy, and very beautiful, classic
eighteenth/nineteenth century leather decoration. Easy to learn, simple to
execute and a joy to look at. It can be embellished by the simplest of blind
tooling, and is a great binding decoration for period work.

Dominic has previously taught this class at PBI (1999), and at Chicago
Center for the Book and Paper Arts (2000), and Iowa Center for the Book
(2000).

All materials will be provided, and the work will be performed on
plaquettes. Those who wish to decorate bindings should bring books already
forwarded to class.

This workshop is sponsored by the California Chapter of the Guild of Book
Workers. For more information on the Guild of Book Workers, please visit
