[GBW] Entry date extended for DeGolyer Triennial SMU

For those of you who intended to, but didn't quite make the December 1
deadline for entering the Third Helen DeGolyer Triennial exhibition and
competition for American Bookbinding, the deadline has been generously
extended. Valerie Hotchkiss, Director of the Bridwell Library at Southern
Methodist University in Dallas, will still accept entries into early January
since the judging has been moved to January 24, 2003.

Sadly, the original schedule for entering this competition has been altered
due to the sudden death of Decherd Turner last summer. Mr. Turner, former
Director of the Bridwell Library from 1950 to 1980, was to be one the
jurors for this exhibition. His dear friend, Colin Franklin, will be coming
from England to jury in his place.

Many entrants have been received, but Valerie would like to encourage more
to enter. I do not need to remind you, that there is no other competition
like this in our country. In addition to having the opportunity to show in
the elegant gallery at the Bridwell Library and to be represented in a full
color catalog, this exhibition is unique in that it will give a $6,000
commission to binder whose design is selected by the jurors. You can enter
any of your recent bindings to represent your talents, and then submit your
proposed drawing for the selected book, the Pennyroyal edition of the
"Adventures of Huckleberry Finn". Additional prizes are awarded as well.
The public announcement of the awards and the exhibit will take place the
first week of June 2003, in conjunction with a bookbinding conference to be
held at the Bridwell Library in Dallas.

For all details regarding this exhibition and competition you can go to the

This is an opportunity not to be missed!
