SPRING-BACK BINDING
The Potomac Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers will meet on Wednesday, April 11th at 6 pm in the downstairs tearoom of the Folger Shakespeare Library, 201 East Capitol Street, S.E., Washington, DC 20003.
Bill Minter will discuss spring-back binding, a technique originally developed by two Englishmen, John and Joseph Williams ca. 1799, to make large account-type books lie flat. It consists basically of a core of thin board molded around the spine and onto the sides of a text block.
Bill Minter apprenticed with William Anthony, Master Binder, in the early 1970's before setting up his own studio in Chicago in 1978. There he performed conservation treatments on a wide variety of book and paper artifacts for libraries, museums, and private clients. In 1994, Bill moved to rural south-central Pennsylvania where he has converted an 1893 barn into a fully-equipped conservation studio.
